S Jaishankar Meets Qatar Leaders; Strengthens Strategic Partnership

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Qatar Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha on Sunday, reaffirming India’s commitment to stronger bilateral ties.

During the meeting, Jaishankar conveyed warm greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Honoured to call on HH Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, in Doha today. Conveyed the warm greetings of PM Narendra Modi and reiterated our commitment to stronger India-Qatar relations. Value his guidance on expanding collaboration and exploring new opportunities,” Jaishankar posted on X.

The External Affairs Minister also held talks with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani.

The leaders discussed key aspects of the Strategic Partnership, including energy, trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges.

Following the meeting, Jaishankar wrote on X, “Pleased to meet Qatar’s Prime Minister & Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani in Doha. Reviewed key aspects of our Strategic Partnership, including energy, trade, investment, and people-to-people connections. Appreciate the exchange of views on Middle East/West Asia, regional and global developments.”

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and addressing a range of shared concerns.

Both sides explored ways to expand collaboration in key sectors, reflecting the strategic depth of India-Qatar relations.

Earlier in October, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal met Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs, Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Sayed, in Doha.

Goyal recalled discussions during Al-Sayed’s August visit to New Delhi, which included a large Qatari investment delegation.

He expressed optimism about deepening economic engagement and enhancing bilateral trade and investment.

India and Qatar share long-standing commercial and people-to-people ties.

Diplomatic relations were formally established in 1973. Regular high-level engagements have strengthened cooperation across sectors.

During Qatar Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s State Visit to India in February 2025, India and Qatar elevated their bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership.

The move reflected mutual trust and shared interests between the two nations.

The recent meetings underscore India’s focus on expanding strategic, economic, and cultural ties with Qatar. They also promote collaboration on regional and global issues.

Both countries aim to build a stronger partnership that benefits their people and enhances stability in West Asia.
