In a decisive move following the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, India has expanded its trade restrictions against Pakistan.
After halting all imports, the Indian government on Saturday barred Pakistan-flagged ships from entering any Indian port.
Directive From Shipping Ministry
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways issued an official directive prohibiting ships bearing the Pakistani flag from docking at Indian ports.
Simultaneously, it banned Indian-flagged vessels from visiting any port in Pakistan.

According to the ministry, this measure serves national security interests and aims to protect Indian cargo, infrastructure, and related assets.
“This directive is in public interest and intended to safeguard Indian shipping,” the ministry stated.
Effective Immediately
The order takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice.
“A ship bearing the flag of Pakistan shall not be allowed to visit any Indian port, and an Indian-flagged ship shall not visit any ports of Pakistan,” the directive clarified.
National Interest And Safety Prioritised
The Ministry emphasised that the decision aligns with the objectives of fostering a robust Indian mercantile marine that serves the nation’s best interests.
It further added that authorities will evaluate any exemptions to the directive on a case-by-case basis.
Pakistan Broader Trade Ban
Earlier on the same day, the Ministry of Commerce announced a complete ban on all imports from Pakistan, both direct and indirect.
According to its notification, the government has prohibited the import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan with immediate effect, regardless of their import status.
The government cited national security and public policy as the driving reasons behind the decision, underscoring that any exceptions will require prior approval from Indian authorities.
