In the early hours of Sunday, heavy rain and lightning pelted numerous parts of the national capital Delhi and its surrounding districts. The showers lowered the temperature, providing some relief from the burning heat.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted heavy rain for the national capital and its surrounding areas on Saturday.
“Over the next five days, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over East Central and parts of Northwest India, including the national capital”, it added.
In addition, the IMD issued a yellow alert for mild to moderate rainfall from June 25 to June 27 in Delhi.
On Thursday, certain portions of the national capital witnessed moderate rain, but by Saturday, the rainfall had increased. On the other hand, the city on Saturday recorded a minimum temperature of 30.4 degrees Celsius, which is two notches above the seasonal normal.
In the meantime, the weather service predicts that the southwest monsoon will arrive in Delhi within the next 48 hours. Normally, the monsoon season arrives in the capital by June 27.
According to IMD data, the monsoon hit the capital on June 30 last year, July 13 in 2021, June 25 in 2020, July 5 in 2019, and June 28 in 2018.
