Amid continued protests on campus following a suicide incident, IIT Delhi has released a detailed note outlining measures aimed at strengthening student welfare, mental well-being, academic flexibility, diversity and grievance redressal.
The institute said student well-being is a fundamental prerequisite for creating an ecosystem where every student feels heard and supported. It highlighted several measures that are already being implemented across the campus.
Under the new curriculum introduced in 2025, first-semester credit loads have been reduced, life-skills courses added, and first-year departmental classes capped at 30-60 students to help minimise academic stress.
Weekend examinations have been minimised, while credit distribution remains flexible.
From the 2024-25 academic year, IIT Delhi removed the minimum CGPA requirement for obtaining a B Tech degree.
The Student-Teacher Interaction Council conducts regular semester-wise get-togethers.
Faculty members engage with students through open-door office hours, project guidance, hostel involvement, and Class Committee feedback mechanisms.
IIT Delhi said student well-being is supported 24/7 by counsellors and psychiatrists, including experts from AIIMS and VIMHANS.
External mental healthcare is fully reimbursed, while an emergency response protocol and Academic Unit Wellness Committees are in place.
The UG Buddy Programme was expanded to PG Buddy and International Buddy programmes in 2025.
The National Resource Centre for Value Education in Engineering has integrated yoga and meditation modules since 2001.
Academic Assistance
Student representation is led by the Student Affairs Council and the Cocurricular Academic Interaction Council.
The Academic Progress Group, operational since 2023, provides evening tutoring and support to students dealing with credit backlogs and academic challenges.
Complaints can be managed through a centralised, reference-tracked ERP portal, the Board for Student Welfare, specialised SC/ST and OBC cells, hostel wardens, the Internal Complaints Committee and confidential counselling channels.
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion has been conducting non-discrimination and accessibility programmes across the campus since 2022.
Freshers are exposed to targeted sensitisation programmes through initiatives such as the Initiative for Gender Equity and Sensitisation. They include the Initiative for Caste Equity and the Office of Accessible Education.
These programmes address implicit and explicit biases related to caste, gender, language, region and ethnicity.
IIT Delhi said student welfare and mental well-being remain an absolute priority. The institute said it will continue strengthening its systems to ensure students receive the necessary support and care throughout their academic journey.
