Congress Leader Sam Pitroda voices concerns over EVMs, stresses importance of Electoral Trust Expressing apprehensions over the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), Congress leader Sam Pitroda emphasized the significance of addressing associated issues ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Pitroda raised concerns, suggesting that if the concerns related to EVMs are not rectified, it could potentially favor the BJP with more than 400 seats in the upcoming elections.
While the Election Commission has consistently defended the reliability of EVMs, some opposition leaders, including those from the Congress, have persistently highlighted apprehensions about possible manipulation. Pitroda highlighted the need for 100% Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) and stressed that the printed slips should be handed to voters rather than being collected in boxes.

Regarding recent statements on the Ram temple in Ayodhya, Pitroda clarified that his remarks were misinterpreted. He advocated for the separation of religion from politics, affirming that personal beliefs should not intertwine with political agendas.
Commenting on Rahul Gandhi’s upcoming Bharat Nyay Yatra and the future of India, Pitroda underlined the significance of shaping a nation aligned with the principles of the Constitution, respecting all religions and preserving institutional autonomy.
Pitroda referred to a report by ‘The Citizens’ Commission on Elections’ chaired by former Supreme Court judge Madan B Lokur, emphasizing the need for modifications in the VVPAT system for enhanced voter verification. He urged the Election Commission to address these concerns to rebuild trust in the electoral process.
When asked about the opposition’s candidate for the Prime Ministerial post, Pitroda mentioned that the INDIA alliance, which includes the Congress, has decided not to project any individual for the role at present. He stressed the collective aim of the alliance to mobilize against the BJP, indicating that the candidate selection will be a decision made collectively post-election.
Pitroda also emphasized that the upcoming elections are parliamentary in nature and not presidential, redirecting the focus away from a singular opposition face against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
