The Indian Development Foundation (IDF) recently organized the ‘Ignite STEM Passion: Empowering Science Teachers’ program at the CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi. The event focused on fostering innovation and inspiration in India’s science education sector. Notably, the program has honored Bharat Express CMD Uprndrra Rai.
Upendrra Rai Honored At The Event
Upendrra Rai, CMD and Editor-in-Chief of Bharat Express News Network attended the program as the chief guest. IDF honored him during the event. In his address, he emphasized the importance of connecting with audiences at a deeper level. He lamented that despite India’s rich scientific heritage, the country still relies on the West for advanced technologies. He pointed out examples from ancient texts, including references to ‘Pushpak Viman’ and ‘divine weapons’ in Mahabharata, to highlight India’s historical scientific prowess.
He blamed India’s declining scientific spirit on a long-standing belief system that views material pursuits as mere illusions. According to him, this mindset stifled the nation’s innovative capabilities.
Buddha’s Contributions To Science Highlighted
Rai underscored the scientific achievements of historical figures like Gautama Buddha. He credited Buddha for pioneering practices such as acupuncture, acupressure, and naturopathy, which are now widely recognized in Japan and China. He also discussed Buddha’s development of techniques that could incapacitate individuals without causing death, laying the groundwork for martial arts like judo and karate.
Three Levels Of Human Existence
Discussing human existence, He explained three levels of living. The first resembles animalistic life, focused on basic survival. The second, the level of enlightened individuals, achieves the full potential of their purpose. The third level, where most humans exist, is marked by stress, ambition, and dissatisfaction. Challenges In India’s Education System
CMD criticized India’s education system for failing to nurture intelligence and creativity. He argued that memorization is mistaken for intelligence, contrasting this with the forgetfulness of geniuses like Albert Einstein. According to Upendrra Rai, intelligence stems from creativity and discovery, not rote learning.
He suggested that the government should establish an Indian Teacher Services (ITS) cadre to prioritize education and scientific thinking. The media personality noted that while India produces skilled individuals, many migrate to the US, where talent is valued and nurtured.
Importance Of Scientific Thinking
The CMD of Bharat Express expressed concern about the lack of scientific awareness among Indians. He highlighted prevalent superstitions, such as relying on faith healers for snake bites, despite most snakes being non-venomous. He called for scientific education that dispels myths and empowers future generations.
Revisiting The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize
CMD Upendrra Rai proposed restoring the responsibility of awarding the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize to CSIR. He cited the example of a renowned neurosurgeon who received the award during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure. He further expressed his intent to write to the Prime Minister regarding this matter.
The event concluded with a call for transformative education policies to foster innovation, respect diverse professions, and create a science-driven society.
