In the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder at RG Kar Hospital, the Home Ministry has petitioned the Supreme Court to initiate contempt proceedings against West Bengal government officials. The application highlights inadequate accommodation and basic facilities for the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel deployed at the hospital.
The Home Ministry reports that the CISF women’s team is particularly affected, lacking proper accommodation, secure storage for equipment, and transportation. Out of 97 CISF personnel at RG Kar Hospital, 54 are women who are facing significant issues. The lack of proper arrangements is impacting the effectiveness of security operations.
West Bengal Government’s Uncooperative Attitude
The Union Home Ministry has accused the West Bengal government of an uncooperative attitude, which is hindering CISF operations. During a recent court hearing, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud emphasized the need for safe conditions for doctors to perform their duties. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured that a sufficient number of CISF personnel would be assigned to protect RG Kar Medical College.
Following this assurance, the Home Ministry decided to deploy CISF forces and appointed IG CISF Kolkata Sector Shikhar Sahay as the nodal officer to oversee compliance with the Supreme Court’s order. The Home Ministry has also sent a letter to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, confirming the deployment of CISF personnel to the hospital premises.
