RG Kar Financial Scam: A special court in Kolkata on Tuesday ordered R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital’s former principal, Sandip Ghosh, to eight days in Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody. Ghosh was arrested by the CBI on Monday evening over alleged financial irregularities at the state-run college.
The CBI had requested a 10-day remand, arguing that additional interrogation was needed to uncover further details about the financial misconduct. However, the court approved only eight days of custody.
Public Outcry and Additional Investigations
As Ghosh was transported to the special court from the CBI’s Nizam Palace office on Tuesday, a large crowd gathered outside and shouted “thief, thief.” CBI officials faced difficulties in managing the situation and securing Ghosh in the vehicle.
The mandatory medical test for Ghosh, required before court presentation, was completed at the Nizam Palace late Monday night. A team of doctors from a central hospital conducted the test on-site due to concerns about public hostility.
Ghosh is also being investigated in connection with the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College. The CBI is conducting parallel investigations into both the financial irregularities and the tragic incident, with both probes under court supervision.
