Ahead of the 78th Independence Day, Jammu and Kashmir has implemented a robust security framework combining human and technical surveillance to ensure a peaceful and incident-free celebration, officials announced on Wednesday.
Director General of Police (DGP) R R Swain led a comprehensive review of the security arrangements on Tuesday.
The focus is on securing the primary Independence Day event at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar, where Lt Governor Manoj Sinha will hoist the national flag and review the parade.
The security challenge is amplified due to recent terror attacks, including a recent incident in Anantnag.
The security strategy includes a multi-layered approach with sharpshooters stationed on high-rise buildings around the stadium, supported by electronic surveillance such as drones and access control systems.
IGP Birdi Oversees Full Dress Rehearsal; Ensures Robust Security
A full dress rehearsal took place on Tuesday with Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, V K Birdi overseeing the parade, which featured contingents from police, security forces, and local schools.
IGP Birdi assured reporters of meticulous security preparations, emphasizing that the forces have considered all potential threats to ensure a safe event.
He acknowledged the possibility of subversive activities but reassured that a detailed plan is in place to counter any such attempts.
In Srinagar, security forces are conducting surprise checks and monitoring vehicles at checkpoints on the city’s outskirts.
In Jammu, heightened security measures are in effect for the celebrations at Maulana Azad Stadium, where Lt Governor’s advisor R.R. Bhatnagar will lead the ceremony.
The Jammu-Pathankot National Highway is under close surveillance to prevent any disruptions.
Barricades have been erected at key points, especially around the Maulana Azad Stadium, and additional Quick Reaction Teams are deployed on sensitive routes.
The Border Security Force (BSF) is maintaining vigilance along the International Border from Kathua to Akhnoor, with special pickets and surveillance measures in place along the Tawi River.
The Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, V K Bhiduri, noted a high level of public enthusiasm for the Independence Day celebrations, despite the increased security presence.
