Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday asserted that the government is actively safeguarding uninterrupted oil and gas supplies despite the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, he emphasised that India has significantly broadened its energy import base and continues to procure resources from diverse global partners.
He noted that India earlier depended on 27 countries for crude oil, LNG, and LPG imports. This network has now expanded to 41 nations, strengthening supply resilience.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that crucial commodities such as crude oil, gas, and fertilisers largely transit through the Strait of Hormuz, where maritime movement has become increasingly difficult amid the conflict.
Despite logistical challenges, the government has ensured that supplies of petrol, diesel, and gas remain stable nationwide.
PM Modi stated that India imports nearly 60 per cent of its LPG requirements. In response to uncertainties, authorities have prioritised domestic consumers while simultaneously increasing local LPG production.
He underlined that, over the past decade, India has taken decisive steps to bolster energy security. Strategic petroleum reserves exceeding 53 lakh metric tonnes have been established, with ongoing efforts to expand capacity beyond 64 lakh metric tonnes.
The Prime Minister added that oil companies maintain additional reserves independently.
PM Modi further stated that India’s refining capacity has risen substantially in recent years. The government remains in constant communication with international suppliers to sustain energy flows.

He confirmed that several vessels previously stranded near the Hormuz Strait have successfully reached Indian ports, reflecting coordinated diplomatic and logistical efforts.
