In a significant political move, Delhi’s sole woman minister Atishi will succeed Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister, with senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Gopal Rai announcing the decision during a Tuesday press briefing.
According to Rai, Atishi received full backing at the AAP legislature party meeting earlier in the day.
He emphasized that Atishi will assume office as Delhi’s Chief Minister until the forthcoming Assembly elections.
Rai also announced that Kejriwal is likely to submit his resignation to the Delhi Lieutenant Governor at 4:30 PM today, paving the way for the party to formally request the formation of the new government under Atishi’s leadership.
In his statement, Gopal Rai took the opportunity to criticize the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the central government, accusing them of orchestrating schemes to undermine and destabilize the AAP.
Rai alleged that these moves were part of a broader conspiracy to weaken the party and claimed that central agencies were actively harassing and intimidating AAP leaders.
Rai praised Kejriwal’s integrity and probity, stating that Kejriwal stepped down due to unfounded attacks on his reputation.
Gopal Rai stated, “Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation reflects his commitment to maintaining the ethical standards he has always upheld.”
The Delhi Minister called for advancing the Assembly elections in Delhi to November of this year.
When asked about potential changes in the Cabinet under Atishi, Rai indicated that decisions regarding new ministerial appointments or Cabinet expansion would be announced at a later date.
Meanwhile, Atishi’s swearing-in ceremony has yet to have a specific date confirmed.
Rai outlined that Atishi’s government will focus on continuing Delhi’s progress and protecting AAP’s flagship initiatives from alleged BJP interference.
