The Union government’s special “Swachhata” campaigns from 2021 to 2024 have yielded impressive results, generating Rs 2,364 crore through the disposal of scrap, according to an official statement. The most recent phase alone, completed in October 2024, brought in over Rs 650 crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the achievement on X (formerly Twitter), sharing Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh’s post and remarking, “Commendable! This effort shows how collective action and efficient management can deliver sustainable results, blending cleanliness with economic responsibility.”
The latest initiative, known as Special Campaign 4.0, was India’s largest campaign to institutionalize cleanliness in government offices and reduce backlogs. Inspired by PM Modi’s directives, this campaign adopted a “saturation approach,” ensuring thorough coverage. During the October 2-31 period, it spanned over 5.97 lakh sites and freed up 190 lakh square feet of office space, the statement noted.

According to Singh, the campaign’s scale has grown significantly, covering more sites each year—up from 2.59 lakh sites in 2023 to nearly 6 lakh in 2024. He emphasized the campaign’s success in reducing pendency, with most government departments achieving 90-100% of their cleanup and decluttering targets.
The campaign’s progress was monitored daily on a dedicated portal, with senior officials, including Cabinet Ministers, overseeing the initiative’s execution. Singh urged officials to sustain this momentum throughout the year, making cleanliness a continual effort.
Special Campaign 4.0 concluded on October 31, with final evaluations set to begin on November 14.
