Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is transforming public procurement in India by promoting transparent processes, wider participation and better opportunities for businesses.
PM Modi made the remarks in a post on X while sharing an article by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on the progress of the GeM platform since its launch on August 9, 2016.
The Prime Minister highlighted technology as a key driver of GeM’s growth, saying it has strengthened ease of doing business and helped create a more competitive and inclusive procurement ecosystem over the past 10 years.
Prime Minister said the platform has particularly helped empower micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and women entrepreneurs by improving their access to government procurement opportunities. He also encouraged people to read Goyal’s article for a detailed understanding of GeM’s achievements and its role in modernising public procurement in India.

GeM helps government departments and public sector institutions digitise their procurement processes. It functions as an online marketplace where buyers and sellers can conduct transactions through a transparent and efficient system.
The platform has been positioned as an important initiative to improve procurement efficiency, reduce bottlenecks, and expand participation among businesses across the country.
Over the past decade, GeM has emerged as a technology-driven platform aimed at making government procurement more competitive and inclusive while facilitating greater participation from smaller businesses and women-led enterprises.
PM Modi’s remarks came as the platform marked 10 years since its launch, with the government highlighting its role in using technology to modernise public procurement and strengthen ease of doing business.
