Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, emphasized that the Dharavi redevelopment project is more than just a construction effort. It’s a mission to uplift over 1 million residents by providing them with a sustainable and dignified living environment. Speaking at Jai Hind College on Thursday during a Teachers’ Day event, Adani outlined the ambitious plan to transform the world’s largest slum over the next decade.
Adani highlighted that the project is designed to offer more than just housing. “We will not only provide dignity of living to over a million residents but also create an unmatched ecosystem of sustainable living and innovation right in the heart of Mumbai,” he said. The project will cover an area of 2.39 square kilometers and aims to offer a 350-square-foot house to each tenement holder—17% larger than what other Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) schemes in Mumbai offer.
Addressing the challenges involved, Adani noted that success lies not in victories, but in the mindset used to overcome obstacles. “We have gathered leaders willing to venture into the unknown,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of tackling challenges head-on.

The project has garnered significant support from Dharavi residents. An ongoing state government survey, initiated on March 18, has already covered over 11,000 tenements through door-to-door visits. Several NGOs working in the area have also pledged their backing for the redevelopment. The survey is being led by the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Ltd (DRPPL), a joint venture between the Maharashtra government and the Adani Group.
