Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday addressed a massive gathering of BJP supporters at Putharikandam Maidan in Thiruvananthapuram, celebrating the party’s historic victory in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and signalling what he described as the beginning of a political transformation in Kerala.
Expressing confidence and optimism, the Prime Minister said that every visit to Kerala had been special, but this time he sensed a ‘new urge and hope’ among the people.
He said the atmosphere reflected a growing desire for change and asserted that the civic body victory marked the fulfilment of a long-cherished aspiration of BJP workers in the state capital.
PM Modi said the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation would lay the foundation for people-centric governance and would serve as a stepping stone for the party’s wider political expansion in Kerala.
Recalling the BJP’s early struggles, he noted that the party once struggled for visibility before achieving its first municipal successes elsewhere, which later paved the way for sustained governance at the state level.
Drawing a parallel with that journey, he said the Thiruvananthapuram result represented a similar turning point for Kerala and indicated the gradual disintegration of both the Left Democratic Front and the Congress-led United Democratic Front.
PM Modi accused the Left and the Congress of corruption and misgovernance, alleging that years of alternating rule stalled development and blocked Central welfare and education schemes.
He cited delays in projects such as the Vizhinjam Port as governance failures, highlighted welfare measures including the PM SVANidhi scheme for 10,000 vendors and ₹13,000 crore in direct transfers to farmers and fisherfolk, and called for a BJP-led ‘Viksit Keralam’, promising action on the Sabarimala gold theft and recovery of misused funds.
