The death toll from a city bus accident in Mumbai rose to four on Tuesday after officials confirmed two more deaths. As a result, authorities launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that nine others suffered injuries and are undergoing treatment at nearby hospitals. Officials added that all the injured remain in a stable condition.
The incident took place late on Monday when a bus operated by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) lost control near the endpoint of its route.
Initial findings indicate that the accident occurred while the driver attempted to reverse the bus.
During the manoeuvre, the vehicle rammed into pedestrians walking along the roadside and ran over an estimated 10 to 12 people before coming to a halt.
Soon after the incident, police personnel, fire brigade officials and rescue teams rushed to the spot. They immediately shifted the injured to the nearest hospitals.
At the same time, police deployed additional forces to manage crowds and regulate traffic in the area.
Authorities identified the deceased as Pranita Sandip Rasam (35), Varsha Sawant (25), Mansi Meghshyam Gurav (49) and Prashant Shinde (53).
Police identified Santosh Ramesh Sawant (52) as the driver and confirmed that Bhagwan Bhau Ghare (47) was serving as the bus conductor at the time.
Eyewitnesses told police that the bus appeared to be speeding moments before it veered off course and struck pedestrians.
Officials said they are verifying these claims as part of the ongoing probe.
BEST, which operates India’s largest public bus fleet, has assured full cooperation with investigators. Authorities are now examining whether mechanical failure, driver error or other factors led to the accident.
Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
