Former Minister Surendra Singh Bhoi Resigns After 38 Years

A day after resigning from Congress, former minister Surendra Singh Bhoi joined the Biju Janata Dal at Sankha Bhawan on Friday.

A day after resigning from Congress, former minister Surendra Singh Bhoi joined the Biju Janata Dal at Sankha Bhawan on Friday.

Bhoi joined the BJD in the presence of the party’s senior leaders. The leaders included Rajya Sabha member Sasmit Patra, and Minister Tukuni Sahu here at the BJP headquarters.

Surendra Singh Bhoi, a longstanding member of the Congress party for 38 years, recently made headlines by resigning from his post.

Bhoi was district Congress Committee (DCC) president of Balangir district. Bhoi resigned from the primary membership. He also resigned from the post of President DCC, Balangir, as well as AICC membership of the Congress party on 28 March.

The development came a day after Cuttack MP Bhatruhari Mahtab and ex-MP Siddharth Mohapatra joined BJP in Delhi on Thursday. Mahtab resigned from BJD on 22 March.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Odisha, the Biju Janata Dal emerged as the dominant party. The party secured 20 out of 21 seats.

Odisha has 21 parliamentary constituencies.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Biju Janata Dal got the maximum number of seats, followed by the BJP and the Congress.

The Lok Sabha elections in Odisha, which comprise 21 constituencies, are set to take place in four phases. The voting dates are 13 May, 20 May, 25 May, and 1 June.
