Karkardooma court
The Karkardooma court is set to hear the regular bail plea of former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid on March 21, in connection with a larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 north-east Delhi riots. Khalid, who has been in custody since September 2020, is seeking bail after his initial attempts were denied by lower and higher courts.
The Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) informed the court that the reply to Khalid’s bail plea would be filed on March 18, paving the way for the upcoming hearing. Khalid’s legal team is expected to argue for his release, while the prosecution will likely present its case against granting bail.
In April 2022, a trial court rejected Khalid’s first bail plea, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges against him. Subsequently, the Delhi High Court upheld the lower court’s decision, stating that the evidence presented against Khalid warranted further detention.
The case against Khalid stems from allegations of his involvement in a larger conspiracy leading to the north-east Delhi riots in February 2020, which claimed numerous lives and caused extensive property damage. Khalid’s role, as alleged by the prosecution, is believed to be significant, prompting authorities to keep him in custody pending trial.
