Former Bengal Deputy Speaker Ashish Banerjee Found Dead At Rampurhat Residence

Former West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker and Trinamool Congress leader Ashish Banerjee was found dead inside a room at his Rampurhat residence in Birbhum district on Sunday.

According to the police, the room was being used as an office of his political party.

Officials said Banerjee was found hanging and a handwritten note was recovered from the premises.

Banerjee, a former Trinamool Congress MLA from the Rampurhat Assembly constituency, was a prominent figure in Bengal politics.

Following the discovery, police began examining the circumstances surrounding his death.

The authorities have sent the body for post-mortem examination and are verifying the authenticity of the handwritten note recovered from the location.

The note, written in Bengali, reportedly contained Banerjee’s reflections on his long political career. He stated that he had never been involved in corruption and expressed regret over entering politics.

The former legislator referred to disagreements within his party and claimed that he had faced humiliation and the loss of responsibilities in the Tarapith-Rampurhat Development Authority.

Banerjee represented Rampurhat as a Trinamool Congress legislator on five occasions and had served in the previous state government led by Mamata Banerjee. He held the position of Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.

A teacher by profession, Banerjee had been associated with politics since his student days. He had previously served as the general secretary of the students’ union at Burdwan University.

In the Assembly elections held earlier this year, Banerjee was defeated from Rampurhat by approximately 24,000 votes.

Reports said that he had subsequently maintained limited contact with the party leadership.

The police investigation will examine all aspects of the case and establish the circumstances that led to his death.
