India has successfully evacuated more than 2,500 citizens from conflict-hit Iran under Operation Sindhu, with evacuees expressing deep gratitude to the Indian government and embassy officials. They praised the swift and safe evacuation efforts amid rising regional tensions.
Saiyada Jeniffer Rizvi, one of the returnees, told ANI, “The condition in Iran was terrible. We would have faced many problems if the Indian Embassy hadn’t helped us. Every moment was difficult, especially with a child. Thanks to the embassy and the Modi government for bringing us here.”
Another evacuee, Kasim, said, “I am very happy to be home. The arrangements were very well.”
Syed Mehboob from Ladakh shared his joy: “I lived in Qom, Iran. I have reached Delhi with the help of the embassy. I want to thank them. I am very happy.”
Special Flight Brings Back More Nationals
Earlier on Tuesday, a special flight from Mashhad landed in New Delhi carrying 281 Indian nationals, three Sri Lankans, and two Nepalese. With this, the number of Indians evacuated from Iran under Operation Sindhu reached 2,576, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
MEA shared the update on X, posting: “MoS @PmargheritaBJP warmly received 281 Indian, 3 Sri Lankan & 2 Nepalese nationals evacuated from Iran. They arrived in New Delhi on a special flight from Mashhad at 1500 hrs on 24 June.”
India helps neighbouring nations
Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, highlighted India’s regional support. “This is the 11th batch from Iran. So far, we’ve brought back 2,576 from Iran and 594 from Israel, including nationals from Nepal and Sri Lanka. That brings the total to 3,180 evacuees.”
He added, “Our government is committed to helping anyone in distress. Operation Sindhu is open to every Indian and we’ve also extended help to neighbouring countries.”
The evacuations followed a dramatic turn in the West Asian conflict. US President Donald Trump recently announced a “complete and total ceasefire” between Iran and Israel.
The conflict began on June 13, when Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion” against Iranian military and nuclear targets. In response, Iran’s IRGC started “Operation True Promise 3,” striking Israeli fuel and energy centres.
Tensions escalated further when the US launched “Operation Midnight Hammer” on three key Iranian nuclear sites. Iran retaliated by firing missiles at US bases in Iraq and Qatar, including the Al Udeid Air Base.
