Assembly Elections 2023: The Election Commission of India has announced the dates for the assembly elections to be held in the three northeastern states 16 February in Tripura and 27 February in Meghalaya, and Nagaland. The results will be announced on 2nd March

Assembly Elections 2023: The term of the assembly ends in March.

The five-year term of the Legislative Assemblies of Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura is going to end on March 12, March 15, and March 22 respectively. Before this, new assemblies are to be formed in all three states.

Political parties engaged in finalizing the strategy

On the other hand, after the announcement of the election dates, the political atmosphere in all three states is intense. Political parties have intensified their activities. Along with this, they are engaged in finalizing the strategy to ensure their victory in the elections.

The results of the 2018 assembly elections were shocking. The left ruling in Tripura for 25 years was ousted by the BJP. The party had made Biplab Deb the CM, although, in 2022, the BJP handed over the command of the state to Manik Sah in place of Deb. Now Chief Minister Manik Sah has the responsibility of getting the BJP back to power.

At the same time, in the 2018 assembly elections in Meghalaya, the National People’s Party (NPP) and BJP coalition government were formed. Congress emerged as the single largest party. However, it fell short of the majority mark.

Ahead of the 2018 assembly elections in Nagaland, the ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF) split into two. The rebels formed the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). Neiphiu Rio, a senior leader of the party and the chief minister of the state, went with the rebel group. Before the elections, the NPF broke the alliance with the BJP. BJP and NDPP contested the elections together. BJP and NDPP alliance came to power and Neiphiu Rio became the Chief Minister.
