After a prolonged wait, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials successfully entered the residence of Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, early Friday morning.
The ED team arrived at Ghosh’s Beliaghata home in central Kolkata around 7:30 AM but faced initial delays.
However, sometime after 9:30 AM, the ED officials succeeded in opening the lock on the entry gate and entered the house.
Once inside, the ED officials, supported by Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel, established a secure perimeter around the property.
This follows the delays that Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials faced on 25 August before they could enter the same residence for a raid.
Ghosh, along with four others, is currently in CBI custody in connection with allegations of financial misconduct at RG Kar.
The ED launched its involvement through an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), which complements the CBI’s ongoing investigation mandated by a Calcutta High Court order.
The ED, unlike the CBI, operates with fewer restrictions regarding the initiation of investigations.
While the CBI requires either state government approval or a court order to proceed, the ED can independently start inquiries.
The Calcutta High Court, in its decision last month, recommended a CBI investigation into the financial irregularities at RG Kar, noting the agency’s ongoing probe into a related criminal case involving a doctor from the same hospital.
The court deemed it prudent for the CBI to handle both investigations concurrently.
