The Election Commission of India (ECI) will announce the schedule for the upcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand at a press conference today at 3:30 pm. The event will take place at the Plenary Hall of Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
Assembly Terms and Electoral Process
The Maharashtra Assembly, which consists of 288 seats, will see its term conclude on November 26, while the Jharkhand Assembly, with 81 seats, will end on January 5, 2025. The ECI is required to complete the electoral process in both states before these deadlines.
Pre-Election Preparations
To prepare for the elections, a team of senior ECI officials, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, visited Mumbai and Jharkhand in September. They held discussions with district collectors, superintendents of police, and political representatives to assess the ground situation.

The team met with representatives from six national parties, including the BJP, Congress, and CPI(M), as well as regional parties like JMM, RJD, and AJSU.
Model Code of Conduct Implementation
Once the ECI announces the election schedule, the model code of conduct will take effect, prompting political parties in both states to finalize their candidates and start their campaigns.
Electoral Landscape
In Jharkhand, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress alliance, part of the INDIA bloc, will face off against the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), Janata Dal (United), and the BJP.
