Dr Md Shams Equbal Urges Urdu Journalism To Embrace Technology & Innovation For 2047

Dr Md Shams Equbal said journalism faced several new challenges after India gained independence. Urdu journalism responded to changing times by adapting and modernising itself.

He said the sector must now prepare for 2047 by adopting technology and innovation. He stressed the need to build a stronger future for Urdu journalism through modern tools and practices.

Dr Equbal questioned the common perception that Urdu belongs exclusively to Muslims. He highlighted the language’s wider historical roots and cited the 1822 publication of Jam-e-Jahan Numa.

He noted that Haridutt owned the publication. His example showed how people from different communities contributed to the growth of Urdu journalism.

Dr Equbal said organisations such as Bharat Express, Sahara and Dainik Jagran’s Inquilab have contributed to Urdu journalism. He urged society to recognise these contributions without viewing them through a religious lens.

He said stakeholders must work towards ending the perception by 2047 that Urdu belongs to only one community.

Dr Equbal urged Urdu journalists to maintain high linguistic standards. He called for greater accuracy in language and statements while reporting news.

He said journalists must prioritise linguistic precision and professional quality across reports, features and other content.

Dr Equbal said Urdu journalism could contribute significantly to the Viksit Bharat 2047 journey by combining its historical heritage with technology, innovation and contemporary journalism.

The Bharat Express and NCPL event featured discussions throughout the day on Urdu journalism, language and its future.

I report stories and occasionally rescue facts from chaos. By profession, I’m a journalist; by conviction, a social worker who believes words should move people, not just headlines. I question power, celebrate ordinary heroes, and sometimes irritate the comfortable. If truth had a shift, I’d probably be working overtime.
