Dr Jitendra Singh Urges India To Shift From Technology Imports To Domestic Innovation

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr Jitendra Singh, has called on India to move beyond importing technologies and focus on developing and manufacturing advanced solutions domestically.

Addressing the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (PHDCCI) 121st Annual Session in New Delhi in October, Dr Jitendra Singh emphasised stronger cooperation between the government, scientific institutions, startups and private enterprises. He further urged industry representatives to engage early in public-sector projects and use PHDCCI as a platform to advance government initiatives.

Highlighting the chamber’s role in linking scientific research with industrial growth, the Minister cited the expansion of India’s space startup ecosystem.

Government data show that the number of space startups increased from one in 2014 to more than 400 by February 2026.

Dr Jitendra Singh discussed the National Quantum Mission, approved in April 2023 with an allocation of Rs 6,003.65 crore over eight years.

The mission, however, supports research in quantum computing, communication, sensing, metrology, materials and devices through four thematic hubs.

Dr Singh identified biotechnology, nuclear medicine and pharmaceuticals as key sectors for developing indigenous products and reducing dependence on imports. He further highlighted the BioE3 Policy, which promotes high-performance biomanufacturing across areas such as bio-based chemicals, biopolymers, precision biotherapeutics and climate-resilient agriculture.

The Minister stressed the need for stronger research infrastructure, funding, testing facilities and skilled professionals to translate scientific discoveries into commercially viable products.

PHDCCI President Rajeev Juneja highlighted the chamber’s 121-year legacy, its support for micro, small and medium enterprises, and its role in connecting entrepreneurship with science and technology.

Vice-President Sanjay Singhania delivered the vote of thanks. Senior Vice-President Anil Gupta and CEO and Secretary General Dr Ranjeet Mehta attended the session.
