Dr Dinesh Sharma Urges Inclusion Of Classical & Mythological Subjects In School Curriculam

Rajya Sabha MP and former Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Dr Dinesh Sharma, has urged the government to make classical and mythological subjects a mandatory part of the curriculum in both government and private schools.

He emphasised that the wisdom embedded in ancient scriptures and the moral values found in mythological stories play a crucial role in children’s lives.

According to him, such knowledge helps shape children’s moral and character values while also preserving the nation’s traditional ethos and cultural identity.

Scriptures Provide Life Lessons and Discipline

Dr Sharma highlighted that the teachings of epics such as the Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita, and Ramayana not only instil moral values in students but also emphasise the importance of discipline and duty in life.

“These timeless lessons can inspire respect for India’s glorious cultural heritage in young minds,” he said.

He further suggested that schools could organise special classes to connect students with mythological narratives.

Such initiatives, he added, would play a pivotal role in linking the younger generation with India’s rich cultural legacy.

The parliamentarian expressed concern that children today are gradually drifting away from the nation’s cultural heritage and religious traditions due to rapid technological advancement and a modern education system focused largely on science and technology.

“While modern education is important, it should not come at the cost of our deep-rooted traditions and values,” Dr Sharma said.

He argued that including scriptures and mythology in education could balance modern learning with cultural awareness, helping students develop a well-rounded perspective.

Strengthening National Identity Through Culture

Dr Sharma concluded that instilling respect for India’s cultural roots through classical texts and mythological stories would not only shape the moral foundation of children but also strengthen the nation’s cultural identity.

He reiterated that blending ancient wisdom with modern learning is essential for preparing future generations to uphold India’s proud traditions while embracing progress.
