Discord In Congress Over Rahul Gandhi’s Endorsement Of Trump’s ‘Dead Economy’ Remarks

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s agreement with US President Donald Trump’s ‘dead economy’ remarks on the Indian economy amid ongoing tariff tensions between India and the US prompted his party colleagues and allies to take an opposing stand.

Speaking to the press at the Parliament complex, the leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha said that the Indian economy is dead, and everyone in the world is aware of it; only PM Modi and Amit Shah disagree with this.

Dissenting with Gandhi’s assertions, senior Congress leader Rajiv Shukla stated that the Indian economy is not weak and that it is a misunderstanding to think that India can be economically finished.

“Trump’s assertion that the economies of Russia and India are dead. PV Narshima Rao and Manmohan Singh pioneered economic reforms. Atal Bihari Vajpayee took those reforms forward,” he said.

Shashi Tharoor highlighted the resilience and strengths of the Indian economy. Tharoor cautioned that India should not give in to the US president’s impractical demands. He also pointed out that India is not dependent on exports like China, and it has a strong domestic market.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP and key opposition figure Priyanka Chaturvedi blasted Trump and called out the arrogance and ignorance of the US president to assume that the Indian economy is a ‘dead economy’.

Trump Mounts Pressure on India To Secure A Deal

In a move to mount pressure on New Delhi, Donald Trump on Thursday said that he remains unbothered by India’s trade relations with Russia and both countries can take their ‘dead economies’ down together.

“I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India; their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world. Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let’s keep it that way,” he said in a post on Truth Social.

Earlier, on Wednesday, Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on India for failing to secure a deal with the US before the August 1 deadline. He also levied an additional penalty on Indian Imports for New Delhi’s trade ties with Moscow.
