Deputy Chief Minister and NCP national president Ajit Pawar visited Cooper Hospital in Mumbai on Sunday to meet the family of party leader Baba Siddique, who died from gunshot injuries on Saturday evening.
Pawar condemned the attack, stating, “The agencies are investigating the murder, and two people have already been detained. Police have been dispatched to five different states.”
Party Cancels Programs in Mourning
Expressing his grief, Ajit Pawar said, “I still can’t believe that Baba is no longer with us.” He pledged support to Zeeshan, Baba Siddique’s son, and the family during this difficult time. After the post-mortem, Siddique’s body will be taken to his house for public viewing.
In a post on X, Ajit Pawar stated, “The NCP has been devastated by the tragic loss of Shri Baba Siddique, a leader deeply loved by many. This is not just a political loss; it’s a deeply personal tragedy that has shaken us all.”
Pawar urged against politicizing the incident. He emphasized the need for unity and respect for Siddique’s family. “Let us show respect and compassion rather than allowing opportunistic voices to turn this tragedy into a political spectacle,” he said.
Following his death, the NCP canceled all its programs for Sunday. The party released a statement on X, saying, “In light of the tragic death of our party colleague Baba Siddique, all party programs for October 13 stand canceled.”
Baba Siddique, 66, was a prominent Muslim face from the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP. He was shot dead in Bandra near his son’s office. Siddique served as a three-time MLA from Bandra West and switched to the NCP from Congress in February.
