Delhi Water Minister Atishi To Sit On Indefinite Fast Amid Water Crisis

Delhi’s Water Minister Atishi has escalated her stance on the ongoing water crisis in the national capital, issuing a stern warning to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a letter penned on Wednesday, Atishi expressed deep concern over Delhi’s water shortage, laying blame on Haryana for exacerbating the situation.

Atishi asserted that despite court directives, Delhi continues to remain deprived of its rightful share of water, with Haryana cited as a primary contributor to the crisis.

She emphasized the dire consequences faced by Delhiites, highlighting that 28 lakh residents are currently without adequate water supply.

In her plea to PM Modi, Atishi conveyed her intention to initiate a ‘satyagraha’ and commence an indefinite fast if a resolution is not reached by 21 June.

Urging immediate intervention, she implored PM Modi to ensure that the Haryana administration releases Delhi’s allocated water without further delay.

“I request you with folded hands to intervene in the matter and ensure that the Haryana administration releases Delhi’s share of water,” Atishi wrote in her letter.

Atishi reported that the water supply from Haryana to Delhi on 18 June significantly decreased to 513 MGD (Million Gallons per Day) from the standard supply of 613 MGD, resulting in a shortfall of approximately 100 MGD.

This reduction, she claimed, has severely impacted the lives of millions of Delhi residents.

Despite efforts by AAP legislators to engage with relevant authorities at the Centre and in Haryana, Atishi lamented the lack of progress in securing the full quota of water owed to Delhi.

Atishi urged the Haryana government to release the remaining 100 MGD of water on humanitarian grounds, underscoring the urgency of the situation to prevent further suffering among Delhi’s populace.
