Delhi has experienced its wettest May in recorded history, with rainfall levels surpassing all previous benchmarks.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Saturday night, warning of potentially disruptive thunderstorms and heavy rain across the National Capital Region (NCR).
Delhi received 188.9 mm of rainfall in May 2025, more than 202% above the average monthly rainfall of 62.6 mm.
This marks the highest precipitation ever recorded in the month of May.
In stark contrast, May 2024 recorded just 0.4 mm of rain, falling 99% below normal, with not a single day of rainfall.
Despite Saturday morning’s relatively high minimum temperature of 34.8°C, Delhi has avoided any heatwave conditions this month.
For only the third time in five years, the city has seen temperatures remain below 40°C throughout May, offering relief from the usual intense summer heat.
Meteorologists link Delhi’s unusual weather pattern to the early arrival of the monsoon in Mumbai, which has disrupted regional weather systems.
While Delhi has turned cooler and wetter, the IMD confirmed that the monsoon has not yet officially reached the capital.
The IMD issued an Orange Alert for Saturday night, warning residents to prepare for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
An Orange Alert signals the likelihood of weather disruptions.
A Yellow Alert remains in effect for Saturday during the day, with rain showers expected at various intervals.
Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 167 on Saturday, placing it in the moderate category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
With unpredictable weather continuing through June 4, the IMD advised residents to remain cautious and plan activities accordingly.
The city’s weather, marked by record rainfall and cooler temperatures, has made May 2025 one of the most unusual in recent memory.
