Delhi Mayor Polls: AAP Yet To Have Its Mayor Elected Ahead Face-Off Between AAP And BJP

Delhi Mayor Polls: Ahead of winning 134 of 250 seats in the MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) election polls, the Aam Aadmi Party is yet to have its mayor elected. An ongoing face-off between the BJP and AAP has taken over the streets of national capital. Both the parties organized protest marches against each other.

The First-Face Off At House

On January 6, a clash broke out over who would take oath first, with the AAP blaming the BJP for ensuring a departure from procedural norms. The ruckus started after presiding officer Satya Sharma asked BJP-appointed Alderman Manoj Kumar to take oath first.

The Aam Aadmi Party started protesting and the Leader of the House Mukesh Goel said it was for the first time in the history of 25 years of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls that the winning party was being sidelined and the runner-up BJP was being asked to take oath first.

BJP leader Satya Sharma, the presiding officer announced by the Lt Governor, took oath and after that the process of taking oath of 10 councilors nominated by LG started, Aam Aadmi Party workers started raising slogans.

Aam Aadmi Party workers said that the first elected councilors should be sworn in. After this, slogans started being raised from the side of BJP councilors as well. Slogans and ruckus turned into a fight in no time. After pushing and shoving, the chairs went to the floor. Due to this uproar, voting could not start in the House.

Ahead of the ruckus, the presiding officer Satya Sharma said, “I have appealed several times for smooth functioning of the House but the ruckus continues. If he sits quietly, then we are ready to administer the oath. If these people do not sit peacefully, then we will wait for the next date.” MCD House has been adjourned due to ruckus between AAP and BJP councilors.

Protesters Take The Street

Both AAP and BJP held protest marches against each other over the issue on January 9. BJP members protest at Chandgi Ram Akhara and near Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s residence demanding the suspension of AAP councilors and MLAs who created violence at the Civic Centre on January 6.

Moreover, Delhi Police had to use water cannons on the 2,000-odd BJP workers who had gathered there for the protest.

AAP workers protested at the BJP headquarters. They alleged that the saffron party had been using unconstitutional means to let their aldermen vote in the MCD house.
