The Delhi High Court has expressed serious concerns about the growing threat of Deepfake technology. The court stated that the central government must take action to address this issue. A bench led by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedla instructed the petitioners to study foreign laws on Deepfake and provide suggestions within two weeks. The court will hear the matter again on October 8.
Court Urges Government Action
Chaitanya Rohilla and others filed the petition. The petitioners’ lawyer argued that the central government believes the Information Technology Act and the Data Protection Act are enough to handle Deepfake technology. However, the court noted that the Deepfake problem extends beyond India and is a global issue. The court emphasized that countries like the United States have already enacted laws to combat this technology.
Petition Calls for Strict Regulations
The court urged the central government to understand the harm caused by Deepfake technology. The court suggested using counter-AI technology to detect and prevent its misuse. The petitioners demanded the blocking of websites that provide access to Deepfake and AI technology. They also called for guidelines to regulate AI technology, ensuring it doesn’t violate privacy and is used responsibly according to constitutional principles.
