The Delhi High Court has asked the CBI to clarify its stand on a court-monitored probe into alleged corruption in electoral bond donations. The court emphasized it is not investigating the allegations but has instructed the CBI to provide a response.
A bench of Acting Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela questioned the intent of the petition. The judges said the request for an investigation seemed unrelated to the case and lacked bona fides.
CBI Objects to Petition
The CBI counsel opposed the petition, calling it unacceptable. The court clarified the petition’s scope was limited and told the CBI to decide on handling the complaint. It added that the petition appeared disconnected from its claims.
The petitioner, Sudeep Narayan Tamankar, cited a Supreme Court decision canceling the electoral bond scheme. He claimed the scheme created an opaque system for financial transactions between corporations and political parties.
Next Hearing on January 7
Tamankar asked the court to direct the CBI to file an affidavit. The bench rejected his request, stating that no case warranted an investigation. The court adjourned the matter to January 7, giving the CBI time to present its position.
The petition stems from Tamankar’s April 18 complaint, filed after the Supreme Court’s August 2 ruling. The case raises concerns about alleged corruption linked to political donations through the electoral bond scheme.
