The Delhi High Court has fined a man ₹1 lakh for posting a video that defamed judges on social media. The court accepted his unconditional apology and closed the hearing. The court recently convicted him of criminal contempt of court for alleging that the judges acted illegally.
A division bench of Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Manoj Jain accepted his unconditional apology and released him from contempt proceedings. The man offered to deposit ₹1 lakh for welfare purposes to compensate for the public time wasted during the contempt proceedings.
The bench directed him to deposit ₹1 lakh within two weeks in the registry. The court specified that the distribution will be ₹25,000 each to the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee, Delhi Poor and Disabled Lawyers Fund, Nirmal Chaya for the welfare of children and destitute women, and Bharat Ke Veer Kosh.
Court warns of strict action
In closing the contempt proceedings, the bench warned that strict action would follow if he behaved similarly in the future. According to his affidavit, he stated that he intended neither to defame the court nor the judges, nor to diminish the dignity of the court while uploading the video on his social media handle.
He claimed that he uploaded the video solely to express his opinion about the ongoing case.
The man concerned responded to a case related to a property in New Ashok Nagar of the city.
