Delhi HC Denies Early Hearing For JAA President In UAPA Case

The Delhi High Court has declined to expedite the bail hearing for Shifa-ur-Rehman, President of the Jamia Millia Islamia Alumni Association, who faces charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots.

Justices Naveen Chawla and Shailender Kaur ruled that Rehman’s bail plea will be heard on its originally scheduled date, November 25.

Rehman’s bail plea was initially filed in June 2022 after a lower court, the Karkardooma Court, rejected his request for bail in April 2022. At the time, the court cited the charges against Rehman as appearing credible at first glance.

On June 3, 2022, the Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Delhi Police, acknowledging Rehman’s appeal against the Karkardooma Court’s decision.

In the upcoming hearing, Rehman’s bail plea will be considered alongside those of other accused individuals in the case, including activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam.
