During a recent hearing regarding damage to government property during the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections, the Delhi High Court issued stern remarks about the ongoing crisis in the city.
Chief Justice Manmohan emphasized that the election should not be viewed as a “festival of money laundering.” He questioned the petitioner about the election spending, suggesting it exceeded that of general elections.
The court instructed students and candidates to clean the campus and remove posters before the counting of DUSU election votes can proceed. Justice Manmohan stated that candidates must first clean and repaint the walls and surfaces marred by campaign materials.

The court also pointed out the excessive funds spent on the elections, asking candidates why they couldn’t use some of that money for cleaning.
The court expressed concern that the situation during the DUSU elections was worse than in general elections, highlighting that candidates ignored the Lingdoh Committee’s ban on printed posters and banners.
In previous hearings, the High Court mandated that Delhi University reimburse the costs of cleaning public property affected by the election campaign, with plans to recover those costs from the candidates responsible.
The court will hear the case again on October 21, reiterating that the election should not corrupt the democratic process.
