Delhi High Court Considers 50% Reservation For Women In Delhi University Elections

The Delhi High Court has asked Delhi University’s Vice Chancellor to consider a 50 percent reservation for women in the upcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections. Acting Chief Justice Manmohan granted three weeks for a decision.

Petition Highlights Gender Inequality

Lawyer Ashu Bidhuri, representing Shabana Hussain, argued that the high cost and manpower involved in DUSU elections hinder women’s participation. Hussain’s petition calls for 50 percent reservation for women and adherence to the Lingdoh Committee’s recommendations.

The Lingdoh Committee, led by former Chief Election Commissioner JM Lyngdoh, submitted its report on May 26, 2006. Hussain claims the recommendations remain unimplemented.

Election Nominations Start September 17

Nominations for the DUSU elections begin on September 17. The court’s decision could impact the election process and promote gender equality in student leadership.
