A Delhi court has sentenced a tuition teacher to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping his 16-year-old student in 2016.
The court also convicted him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for rape and criminal intimidation.
Delhi Court Judge Rejects Plea For Leniency
Additional Sessions Judge Anu Aggarwal delivered the verdict on April 1, stating that the court found no grounds to show leniency.
“On the basis of overall facts and circumstances, the convict is sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years under Section 6 of the POCSO Act,” the judge said.
The convict also received a one-year jail term for criminal intimidation, although the court directed both sentences to run concurrently.
Prosecution Highlights Breach Of Trust
Additional Public Prosecutor Arun KV argued against leniency, stating that the convict had betrayed the trust of the minor’s parents.
“The accused, being a teacher, exploited the faith reposed in him by the family who sent their daughter for tuition,” he told the court.
Survivor’s Counsel Seeks Strict Punishment
The survivor’s legal counsel urged the court to impose a stringent sentence, emphasizing the lasting psychological impact on the girl.
“She continues to suffer mental trauma and blames herself for the incident,” the counselor stated.
Delhi Court Grants Compensation To Survivor
In addition to the jail sentence, the court ordered the convict to pay Rs 10.5 lakh in compensation to the survivor.
The judge stated that the compensation aims to provide some relief for the emotional and psychological damage suffered by the minor.
