In a significant development, a Delhi court has reserved its decision on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail plea and his request for his wife, Sunita Kejriwal, to accompany him during medical examinations.
After hearing arguments from both sides at length during a prolonged hearing on Wednesday, they made the decision.
Initially, the court had expressed reluctance to reserve its order, with Vacation Judge Niyay Bindu emphasizing the sensitivity of the case.
“I will not reserve order. Everyone knows it is a high-profile matter. I will pass the order after hearing it,” she had stated, scheduling a continuation of the hearing for Thursday.
During Wednesday’s proceedings, CM Kejriwal’s legal team, led by senior advocate Vikram Chaudhary, challenged the foundation of the case against him.
Chaudhary argued that the allegations primarily rested on statements coerced by individuals seeking leniency from the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
He questioned the credibility of these witnesses, asserting they had been pressured into making false statements.
Furthermore, Chaudhary contended that the timing of Kejriwal’s arrest, just before the Lok Sabha elections, hinted at political motives behind the charges.
He maintained that there was a lack of substantive evidence or financial trail linking Kejriwal to any wrongdoing.
Defending the Accusation: Additional Solicitor General S V Raju’s Stand On Kejriwal’s Case
In contrast, Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, representing the ED, defended the investigation by asserting that a court had formally accused Kejriwal of money laundering, not just summoned him.
S V Raju underscored the legality of inducements provided to witnesses, which he argued were essential for gathering evidence.
Raju further alleged that Kejriwal, both individually and as the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, engaged in corrupt practices. He claimed there was a purported demand for a bribe amounting to Rs 100 crore.
The court had also addressed a separate application from Kejriwal seeking permission for his wife to accompany him during medical examinations within Tihar Jail.
The decision on this matter awaited a report from the jail authorities.
Judge Niyay Bindu postponed the final verdict to Thursday, citing pending administrative tasks and the need for further deliberation on the case.
