Delhi court defers hearing on Engineer Rashid's interim bail plea

A Delhi court on Saturday postponed the hearing on former MLA and MP-elect Engineer Rashid’s interim bail application to July 1 after the NIA requested more time to submit objections.

Currently held in Tihar Jail, Engineer Rashid contested the Lok Sabha elections from the Baramulla constituency in J&K, where he defeated former Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah by over two lakh votes.

Following his victory, Engineer Rashid submitted an interim bail application to the special sessions judge, arguing that he had already served more than half of the total sentence prescribed for the charges against him.

In his application, he claimed that the court should grant him bail to take his oath as a Parliament member.

On Saturday, the NIA counsel requested additional time from the Patiala House Court to file objections to the bail application, leading to the court deferring the hearing until July 1.

The NIA opposes the interim bail application and states that they have charged Engineer Rashid alongside Yasin Malik of the JKLF, Syed Salahuddin of the Hizbul Mujahideen, and Hafiz Saeed, founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror outfit.

The NIA counsel argued that granting bail to Engineer Rashid could set a precedent for others charged with him.
