Delhi Court Disposes Petition Seeking Sonam Wangchuk’s Release, Lawyer Withdraws Case

A Delhi court has dismissed the petition demanding the release of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk. The court also permitted lawyer Prashant Bhushan to withdraw the petition. During the hearing, the court questioned how Wangchuk could be in custody, referencing his recent media interview.

Arrest at Sindhu Border

Sonam Wangchuk was arrested at the Sindhu border on Monday night. He had arrived in Delhi after completing a 700-km padyatra. Delhi Police detained him and around 120 supporters who accompanied him. The police stopped Wangchuk as he attempted to enter Delhi, citing a restriction under Indian Penal Code Section 168, which prohibits gatherings of more than five people.

Protest and Padyatra

Wangchuk was on his way to protest at Mahatma Gandhi’s Samadhi in Rajghat. The padyatra was organized by the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance. They have been demanding statehood for Ladakh, its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule, a separate Public Service Commission, and dedicated Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil. The Delhi Police had imposed Section 163 of the Indian Penal Code for six days, leading to the detention of Wangchuk and his group.
