Delhi is set to face another sweltering day on Thursday, with temperatures forecast to remain dangerously high, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert across the city.
According to the IMD, temperatures on Wednesday hovered between 40.9°C and 45°C across various locations.
The heat index, which combines humidity and temperature to reflect how hot it feels, peaked at a staggering 51.9°C.
By 5:30 PM, Ayanagar emerged as the hottest spot in the capital, recording 45°C.
Other parts of the city followed closely behind: Ridge registered 43.6°C, Palam 44.5°C, Pitampura 43.5°C, Safdarjung 43.3°C, and Lodhi Road 43.4°C.
Mayur Vihar, while slightly cooler, still reported a severe 40.9°C.
These intense conditions are likely to persist through Thursday, with some relief likely from Friday, 13 June, onwards.
The IMD highlighted that current readings are three to four degrees above normal, intensifying the ongoing heatwave that will likely last until the end of Thursday.
A red alert – the IMD’s highest-level warning – remains in place, urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid the sun during peak hours, and minimise outdoor activities.
Thursday’s forecast includes maximum temperatures between 43°C and 45°C. Gusty winds ranging from 40 to 60 km/h may blow, and very light to light rain or thunderstorms could develop later in the day or during the night.
From 13 June, the IMD expects a slight decline in temperature and plans to downgrade the alert to orange.
Between 14 and 17 June, temperatures are likely to fall to between 37°C and 42°C, potentially bringing relief through light to moderate rain and gusty winds.
