December 15 marks a significant milestone in Indian political history, as it was on this day in 2002 that PM Narendra Modi secured his first clear electoral mandate as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, barely a year after assuming office.
The Assembly elections delivered a sweeping victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won 127 of the 182 seats, firmly consolidating its hold on the state.
The scale of the win surprised many observers and reshaped Gujarat’s political landscape.
Contemporary media dubbed the result ‘Modi magic’, reflecting how the outcome defied most pre-election forecasts.
A post by the Modi Archive on social media recalled that the verdict directly endorsed PM Modi’s leadership. It transformed him from a crisis-era administrator into a leader with an unequivocal democratic mandate.

Contesting from the Maninagar constituency in Ahmedabad, PM Modi won by a commanding margin. He later described the result as a victory for the self-respect of Gujarat’s people, underscoring the emotional and political significance of the mandate.
From Appointment to Authority
PM Modi first took oath as Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001, after the BJP’s national leadership appointed him to replace Keshubhai Patel. The 2002 elections marked his transition from an appointed leader to one backed decisively by voters.
This mandate laid the foundation for a long and influential tenure. PM Modi went on to serve as Gujarat’s 14th Chief Minister for nearly 13 years across four consecutive terms. This tenure made him the longest-serving Chief Minister in the state’s history.
Maninagar holds a special place in PM Modi’s political journey. He represented the constituency three times as Chief Minister, winning comfortably in the 2002, 2007 and 2012 Assembly elections.
After becoming Prime Minister in 2014, PM Modi bid an emotional farewell to the seat. The constituency continues to symbolise his rise in Gujarat politics.
