In an unprecedented scene at Kochi airport on Friday, grief-stricken families and officials gathered as the bodies of those who perished in a fire tragedy in Kuwait arrived.
One official described the somber atmosphere, marked by tears and heart-wrenching emotions, as unparalleled in the airport’s history.
An official from the Airport Authority of India disclosed that they swiftly prepared to handle the arrival of 45 bodies, treating them with utmost respect despite classifying them as cargo.
The official stated that they expedited customs, emigration, and health clearances to ensure that 31 bodies were promptly available for grieving families.
Families Mourn As Kuwait Fire Victims Return
Families, devastated by the sudden loss of their loved ones, could not contain their emotions upon the arrival of the bodies.
IANS reported one father, visibly distraught, recounted how he sent his son to work in the same company in Kuwait after retiring himself.
“My son came back last in January for his mother-in-law’s funeral, and now I’m here to ‘receive’ him,” he lamented, his voice breaking.
Among the victims was Stephin Abraham, 29, an engineer from Kottayam, who had been working in Kuwait for six years.
Meanwhile, relatives, unable to comprehend the tragedy, struggled to come to terms with the loss.
“His new house was almost ready. He was just here finalizing everything,” one grieving relative shared amidst tears.
The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, alongside Union Minister Suresh Gopi, opposition leaders, ministers, and numerous mourners, solemnly received the bodies as they arrived.
Meanehile, the atmosphere at the airport was one of profound mourning and reflection, marking a dark chapter in the state’s history.
The incident however has left a deep impact on the community, underscoring the fragility of life and the devastating toll of unexpected tragedies.
As Kerala grapples with this loss, efforts continue to support the families of the victims and ensure they receive the necessary assistance during this difficult time.
