Authorities in Manipur have reimposed a curfew in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Thoubal districts due to escalating tensions in the capital and surrounding areas.
On Tuesday, students, who had protested on Monday outside the Chief Minister’s Secretariat and Raj Bhavan, gathered at the all-women Ima Market. They locked themselves inside the market’s first floor, which was closed due to the curfew.
A senior Home Department official explained that the curfew, effective from 11 a.m., aims to control the law and order situation. Security forces are conducting searches to locate potential troublemakers and ensure peace.

Students had previously demonstrated to protest rising violence, demand protection of territorial integrity, and call for the transfer of Unified Command to the state government. They criticized both Central and state authorities for their handling of the ethnic conflict and demanded the withdrawal of additional Central forces.
The Education Department responded to the unrest by closing all schools in the state until Tuesday. The recent violence, which began on September 1, has resulted in 12 deaths and over 20 injuries.
In response, security forces, including Assam Rifles and Central Armed Police Forces, have intensified counter-insurgency operations across the state.
