RG Kar Tragedy: Doctors March To Bengal Health Department HQ

The protesters are demanding the suspension of key officials, including the state’s Health Secretary, Director of Health Services, and Director of Medical Education

RG Kar Tragedy

Thousands of doctors, nurses, and medical students from across West Bengal have begun a protest march towards Swastha Bhavan, the state health department’s headquarters. The demonstration follows last month’s rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

The protesters are demanding the suspension of key officials, including the state’s Health Secretary, Director of Health Services, and Director of Medical Education. The march started from Karunamoyee crossing in Salt Lake, and heavy security has been deployed by Bidhannagar City Police around Swastha Bhavan.

Protest Against Corruption and Threat Culture

Protesters are also raising concerns about alleged corruption and mismanagement in state-run medical colleges. They specifically accuse Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar, and his associates of fostering a “threat culture.” Ghosh has already been arrested by the CBI for financial misconduct, and some of his allies have been suspended.

Doctors Continue Despite Court Warning

The protest persists despite a Supreme Court warning that junior doctors must return to work by 5 p.m. on Tuesday. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also urged the junior doctors to end the strike and resume duty. However, the doctors have announced their intention to continue protesting.
