Akhilesh Yadav, chief of the Samajwadi Party, has sharply criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for allegedly obstructing his visit to the Jay Prakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC) on the birth anniversary of the freedom fighter. Hours later, Congress National Spokesperson Pawan Khera weighed in, questioning the state of democracy in Uttar Pradesh.
Barricades and Restrictions
Yadav further expressed his outrage on social media platform X, revealing that the entrances to the JPNIC were barricaded with tin sheets on Thursday night, preventing access. He condemned the situation, stating, “This is the ostentatious Amritkal of freedom under the BJP’s rule.
A wall was raised to stop people from paying tributes. The path the BJP has closed symbolizes their closed thinking.”

He further accused the BJP of harboring ill will towards freedom fighters like Jai Prakash Narayan, suggesting that the party’s guilt over not participating in the freedom struggle inhibits their ability to honor revolutionaries, even on their birth anniversaries. “Condemnable!” he added.
Questions Raised About Democracy
Pawan Khera supported Yadav’s stance, asserting that preventing citizens from paying their respects raises significant concerns about democracy in the state. “If authorities put someone under house arrest and deny them the opportunity to pay respects, it raises concerns about the state of democracy,” he stated.
Focus on Governance
Khera also took aim at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regarding the Delhi Chief Minister’s residence issue, urging them to prioritize the pressing needs of Delhi residents rather than engaging in disputes over accommodations. “The priorities of the people of Delhi are much bigger and more severe than these disputes,” he said.
Critique of Central Policies
On another front, Khera criticized the ‘One Nation, One Election’ policy, recently opposed by the Kerala Assembly, calling it a distracting strategy employed by Prime Minister Modi. “Such concepts lack justification in a democracy with a federal structure.
They contradict the constitutional arrangements we have in place,” he remarked.
Outlook for Congress in Jammu and Kashmir
Addressing the evolving political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, where the National Conference, led by Omar Abdullah, has gained support from four Independent leaders, Khera further assured that decisions within the Congress party would follow established procedures after thorough discussions.
