Jagdish Tytler
New Delhi: The Rouse Avenue Court will announce its verdict on framing charges against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case on August 30. On July 19, Special Judge Rakesh Siyal reserved the verdict.
Allegations and Legal Proceedings
A witness alleged that Tytler emerged from an Ambassador car in front of Gurdwara Pul Bangash on November 1, 1984, and incited the mob to kill Sikhs. The accusation claims that Tytler told the mob to kill Sikhs, stating, “They killed our mother.” This incident resulted in the deaths of three people.
Last year, the Rouse Avenue Court granted anticipatory bail to Tytler on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and a bail amount of the same sum. The court directed Tytler not to tamper with evidence or leave the country without permission and ordered him to surrender his passport.
The CBI has filed a chargesheet against Tytler under several IPC sections, including 147 (rioting), 148, 149, 153A, 188, 109 (abetment to offense), along with 302 (murder), 295, and 436. The case involves the burning of Gurdwara Pul Bangas in Azad Market on November 1, 1984, resulting in the deaths of Sardar Thakur Singh, Badal Singh, and Gurcharan Singh. This incident occurred a day after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Another witness, cited in an affidavit before the Justice Nanavati Commission of Inquiry in 2000, claimed to have seen Tytler’s car arrive near the TB Hospital gate in Delhi. Tytler allegedly scolded the people there for not following his instructions.
