Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi has called for the upcoming film “Emergency,” starring Kangana Ranaut, to be withheld from release until it receives approval from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). On Sunday, Channi stressed that the SGPC, representing the Sikh community, must first review and approve the film’s depiction of Sikh history.
Channi stated firmly, “Kangana Ranaut’s film should accurately portray Sikh history, and the SGPC should have the final say. Without their permission, the film will not be released.”
His remarks come amidst ongoing protests in Punjab against Kangana Ranaut. The actress has faced backlash due to her past comments against farmers and the controversy surrounding “Emergency,” which centers on the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Kangana, in an earlier interview with IANS, mentioned the film’s scheduled release on September 6. She noted that “Emergency” had been cleared by the censor board. However, she also expressed her determination to defend her film, saying, “If the results are unfavorable, I am prepared to fight for it. I am ready to go to court to protect my film and my rights as an individual. You can’t change history and scare us with threats.”
Additionally, Channi addressed recent comments by former MP Simranjit Singh Mann, who had harshly criticized Kangana for her remarks on the farmers’ protest. Channi suggested that Mann’s reaction was driven by anger and should have been avoided. He remarked, “Kangana should not be taken too seriously, and Simranjit Singh Mann should have refrained from unnecessary comments driven by anger.”
As protests against Kangana continue, Channi underscored the historical unity of Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. He emphasized that this bond has “never been broken and will not be allowed to break.” He warned that any attempt to disrupt this unity would face strong opposition.
Reflecting on Punjab’s post-independence history, Channi highlighted the peaceful coexistence of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians in the region. He expressed hope that this harmony would continue in the future.
