Congress Denounces Assam Police Case as Politically Motivated, Citing Lack of Factual Basis

The Congress party, rejecting the police case in Guwahati against its leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, deemed it a “political FIR” lacking factual basis. The Assam police filed the FIR concerning alleged “wanton acts of violence” during the party’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.’ Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, addressing the media in North Salmara, asserted the party’s intention to explore legal avenues, dismissing the charges as politically motivated.

The FIR, registered suo motu by Assam police, listed national and state leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, Jitendra Singh, Jairam Ramesh, and others. The alleged acts of violence occurred when party supporters deviated from the approved route, breaking barricades and clashing with the police during an attempt to enter Guwahati.

Ramesh thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for unintentionally providing publicity to the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.’ He characterized the FIR as a mere political threat by the Assam CM, emphasizing the Congress’s determination to continue the Yatra and explore legal remedies.

Stating that the fight extends beyond the FIR, Ramesh positioned it against the BJP-RSS ideology, with Sarma symbolizing divisive tendencies. Ramesh accused Sarma of embodying an ideology rewriting the country’s history and fostering corruption since assuming the CM role.

The Congress leader expressed gratitude for the inadvertent publicity by Sarma, jokingly acknowledging his efforts to make the Yatra a success. Ramesh highlighted the five-point blueprint of ‘Nyay’ as the Congress’s main election issue in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, addressing justice for youth, women, farmers, laborers, and equal participation.

Gaurav Gogoi, Congress MP, praised the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ for empowering people amidst an atmosphere of fear in Assam. He credited Rahul Gandhi for understanding and respecting the local culture, addressing public concerns, and standing against economic inequality and hatred.

The Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi, commenced on January 14 from Manipur and will conclude on March 20 in Mumbai. The Assam leg, spanning from January 18 to 25, covers 833 km in 17 districts. Overall, the Yatra plans to traverse 6,713 km in 67 days, passing through 110 districts in 15 states.
